Art Therapy for older people in Cyprus

Our partners from Cyprus met Mrs Anna, a woman in her 70s who lives in Nicosia, during the pilot project at the Nicosia Multifunctional Centre. Mrs Anna told them about her favourite activity, visiting a gallery, getting to know paintings and artists and then painting and expressing herself.

This is the method of art therapy, where art helps people to express their feelings and thoughts in order to better understand themselves and their surroundings.

For older people, art therapy has significant emotional and psychological benefits. People can communicate non-verbally through artistic endeavours, which is particularly beneficial for those who have difficulty putting their feelings into words. Stress, worry and despair can be alleviated through this type of expression. Making art gives one a sense of purpose and accomplishment, which boosts self-esteem and elevates mood. In addition, creating art can be a very calming and contemplative practice that improves mental health.
